In the Dadian Gallery at Wesley Theological Seminary March 18 – May 17, 2019 Reception, Artist Talk, & Retirement Celebration Tuesday, April 9th, 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm in Elderdice Hall
After several years in which I rarely did anything in my studio but write, a new series of works has begun to emerge that I am calling “Night Visions.” Using the same visual vocabulary of symbols and techniques drawn from historical iconography, knot-work patterns, and juxtapositions that arise from my dreams and memories that I have been using for many years, but now virtually drained of color, I have returned to the idea of reliquaries, in which something simple and precious is hidden within an ornate and symbolic container. In these works, however, the relics are not the bones of saints or other bits and pieces of the past, but rather pieces of copper newly-shaped with fire and hammers in my studio.
